Taylor Made Tpi putter
Shaft:TaylorMade proprietary 34 inches
Grip:Taylor Made
Looks:TaylorMade were never really known for their putters. The
Nubbins was an ugly brute with it's pink "nubs" insert akin
to the face of a table tennis bat and the disappointing black insert Tour
Preferred TM series. (bet you didn't see many of these on the pro tours!).Quite
simply put they were tacky and although they may have worked for some
nobody wanted to be seen using one.The Tpi is a different matter. This
is an elegant putter, finished in a non glare black nickel (reminds one
of the Scotty Cameron Teryllium). The grip is a pistol style crossline
which is not too thin (desirable in a putter to eliminate overactive hands)
and is comfortable to the touch. The putter feels v.heavy but beautifully
balanced and the black insert is classy and blends in superbly in the
face. This model is center shafted (becoming very popular at the moment)
and has heel toe weighting first popularised by Ping and now almost standard. This
is a putter you could be proud to call your own!

Performance:The heavy head on this putter makes it a joy to swing. The
head moves beautifully through the ball on all lengths of putts, but comes
into it's own on 30-40 foot putts where the ball always seemed to be in
the "dustbin lid" range for the second putt. The other benefit
of the increased weight is that this putter will hold it's own on slow
greens, particulary in the winter months. The insert is soft but not on
the overly soft side (unlike the Odyssey white hot and more like the new
Nike Oz or TaylorMade Rossa series). The insert dampens vibration on impact
so putts feel soft off the putter, but not so much that you still can still
distinguish a mishit. The ball rolls smoothly and on a true line. There
are 3 alignment aids in the back cavity which are really top class and
really help line up anything from 6 feet in.Confidence is a huge part
of good putting and this putter will inspire it.Center shaft putters feel
very solid, but if it isn't your cup of tea there are 8 other models (good
looking blades to compact mallets) to suit all tastes. It is also important
to get the proper length shaft for your height and style to allow your
hands to hang properly with minimal tension and your pro or golf shop
assistant will help here.

Value:At $139 this putter is excellent value. The TaylorMade Rossa
tour and sport will appeal more to low handicappers because of their presence
on pro tours, but trade in and resale value on the Tpi make it a bargain
buy when compared to Odyssey White Hot and DFX in particular.

Verdict:This is a fine putter with good weight, feedback, alignment. It
also represents good value for money, but some TaylorMade junkies will
go fot the fine Rossa range. It's basically down to personal choice and
a putter is probably the most personal club in any golfers bag.
