Taylormade 510 driver

Club:TaylorMade R510 driver 9.5 degree loft
Shaft:TaylorMade MAS 2 75 stiff flex
Grip:TaylorMade TNG

Looks: Taylor Made invented the metalwood (although it could be said that Callaway perfected it) and over the years they have built their reputation on the quality of their metalwoods and drivers in particular. The Burner gave way to the Firesole and then the much lauded 300 series.
This R510 is a direct replacement for the 300 (smallest headed) driver of the earlier series. It is 330cc in volume which is now considered compact by modern day standards. The head is titanium and finished in a rich black which gives the club an even more compact look.
Like the 300 of before there is a slightly raised central area in the crown, which serves as a useful alignment aid at address. There is a bald area (no grooves) in the centre of the clubhead which is the sweetspot of the club. The club is perfectly square in face angle and also appears quite upright at address which helps if you tend to hit a slice.
The MAS 2 75 (75gram in weight) shaft is finished in black as is the fine quality proprietary grip. There is the addition of "Tuned Weight Cartridge" at the rear of the sole. This consists of 3 tungsten rods enclosed in a urethane housing which are said to dampen vibration and can be adjusted to suit reshafts with premium graphite shafts to enhance performance.
This sounds like a dubious claim as this would require expert analysis of individual swings. This feature is not available at address however and the overall club looks excellent.

Performance: When it comes to drivers 2 things are paramount;(1) Consistency and (2) forgiveness. The average high handicapper will not hit any 2 drives in the same place while the good low handicapper will look to be rewarded for finding the centre of the clubface.
The shaft is a little on the heavy side for the high handicapper, but for the low handicapper it leads to a stable impact, which is sweet and sounds just right, solid and not too tinny.Ball flight on pure strikes is quite low and penetrating and there is a lot of roll on the ball on landing giving an overall excellent distance.Mishits are not treated very well and hits off the heel in particular struggle to get anywhere.
Toe hits fare a little better, but the harsh feedback due to what feels like a stiffer than usual shaft is not nice at all.Drawing and fading the ball is quite easy (particulary a soft fade) and this is a result of the more focused sweetspot and good quality shaft.
In comparison to the 300 this club hits the ball on a lower trajectory and perhaps 5-10 yards further.

Value:$699 is steep, but there are real bargains to be found on the internet and golf exchanges. In terms of resale and trade in value be warned that TaylorMade's penchant for changing models on a far too frequent basis makes losses here inevitable.

Verdict:Good club for a traditionalist low handicapper who swings the club well. The relatively small head will not offer forgiveness for the mid-high handicapper who should look to the R580 or Cobra SZ series.Drivers of this size look a little dated nowadays and proof of this is that for the new (yes NEW!) Taylor Made XD series there is no equivalent model for this club.
