Taylormade 860 driver

Club:Taylor Made Burner 860 9.5 degree
Shaft:TaylorMade burner lite stiff flex
Grip:TaylorMade proprietary

Looks : Those of you who have owned or remember the original Burner drivers will be pleasantly surprised when you see this titanium beauty. The old burner was copper in colour and by today's standards looks like a lollipop in terms of size. The black clubhead here is large (not as large as XR-05 but definitely larger than R510 and R540) and the club feels heavy but beautifully balanced in the hands. The shaft is stylish and the grip is a quality one, although perhaps a little on the thin side. The clubhead is deep and sits superbly behind the ball,v.square and powerful looking. The finish is TaylorMade quality from top to bottom.

Performance : Firstly get some extra long tees as you are going nowhere fast without them here.Booming drives are the norm rather than the exception with this honey.Best results as always are achieved with a fluid, smooth tempo swing which lets the club do the work. The shaft is rather soft (flexible) and is not really designed to be hit flat out.Trajectory is medium to high and the ball does not roll much on landing. The impact sound is beautifully solid (metallic but not tinny as with Cobra 370/420 or Adams redline and more metallic than Ping si3) in other words perfect.Misses with this club tended to be to the left for the right handed player, probably because of overswinging in initial stages and also perhaps because all TaylorMade drivers have very upright lies in comparison to their competitors (particulary Callaway) and this tends to encourage draws rather than fades (a bonus for slicers and players looking for increased roll on landing). To sum up,performance is first class!

Value : This driver represents amazing value .It would go head to head with Cobra 370/420,Cleveland launcher 400,Callaway great Big Bertha 11 and Adams Redline and is much better bang for your buck than all these.Resale and trade in value will be ok as it's a big name brand.Only drawback is all too frequent model changes by TaylorMade.

Verdict : This is a club which will be a huge hit with mid to high handicap players who will love the performance but will love the price tag even more!If you were to sum up TaylorMade's drivers I would say that if you are a high handicapper with lots of cash buy an XR-05,if you are on a budget buy the Burner 860 and you will lose perhaps 5-10 yards in distance but will not be disappointed.
If you are a low handicapper on a budget buy a R540 with a premium shaft (Grafalloy,Pro force 65,etc).If you are a very serious low handicapper and money is no object then buy a TP510,the club of the tour pro.You will get a Fujikura speeder 757 shaft AS STANDARD (These alone retail for $300 in America).Thie finished club is expensive but is best driver on the market today.
Marks:9.5 (can't give 10!!)

Overall : High quality set for the high quality player. If you are a sweet striking single figure player, look no further than these clubs. If you are "improving",steer clear of these and invest in a secondhand set of something like the excellent Callaway X-14 until you are ready to tackle something like this.
